Virgin Active Health Clubs has launched Running Clubs at its 71 fitness centres across the UK. Inspired by the Virgin London and Brighton marathons, thousands of their health club members are taking to the streets, parks and tracks across the UK every week, making their surroundings into their gym for a fun, effective workout.

Completely free to members of Virgin Active Health Clubs, Running Club sessions are timetabled alongside other weekly gym classes but take place outside of the health clubs themselves, allowing members to keep fit in the open air. Small groups of health club members simply meet at the appointed time and a Personal Trainer or Fitness Coach then leads the group on a running session around the area of their local fitness centre.

Running Clubs start with 5K routes, and are carried out weekly for 6 weeks, meaning stamina is built up and times are recorded in order to track development as the course goes on. As the health club members progress, different running techniques are introduced to further aid and maximise improvements to their times.

There are also 5K sessions for intermediate runners which also follow a 6 week schedule. Thereafter, health club members can choose to progress to run 10K. In addition, there is an 8 week plan for these runners and for advanced runners, as well as gym-goers training specifically for charity runs and races. There is an ‘improvement’ phase for post-10k.

Commenting on the newest fitness initiative from Virgin Active Health Clubs, Gillian Reeves – National Group Exercise Manager said: “Running is a fantastic way to improve general cardiovascular fitness and is a really enjoyable way to workout. Running Clubs have the benefit of offering the motivation and social aspect that exercising in a group offers. Running outdoors, coupled with interval training on a treadmill, is hugely effective as the body experiences different types of motion and terrain which will build stamina and fitness.

With the summer weather, I’m sure that running outdoors, coupled with the added benefit of a professional fitness instructor, will be a big hit with our health club members.”
